Volunteer with Revelstoke Bear Aware
Revelstoke Bear Aware is always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help with a variety of tasks. We need dedicated people to help spread the message by going door to door, garbage tagging, staffing our display at public events and working with The Gleaning Project.
The Gleaning Project
The Gleaning Project gathers surplus fruits and vegetables from our community, helping to reduce bear attractants. Residents with excess fruit can contact Revelstoke Bear Aware to arrange volunteers to harvest fruit. The volunteers receive some of the fruit and the remaining fruit is donated to Community Connections Food Bank. Community Connections Food Bank was pleased to receive 600 pounds of cherries, plums and apples from The Gleaning Project in 2010.
Garbage Tagging
Garbage is consistently available to bears and is the number one bear attractant in Revelstoke. Currently, the City of Revelstoke’s Garbage Collection bylaw #1759 restricts garbage being placed on the curb outside the hours of 7am and 7pm on the day of collection. To conduct Garbage Tagging, the Revelstoke Bear Aware Community Coordinator and volunteers go out the night before garbage day and tag garbage cans that have been placed on the curb. A bright yellow sticker is placed on the can that states “Garbage Attracts Bears” “Store containers inside until collection day.” Garbage Tagging is a successful tool to educate residents about storing garbage properly to avoid attracting bears into our community.
Door-to-Door
Revelstoke Bear Aware initiates door-to-door education campaigns aimed in areas with high or potentially high bear activity. Bear Aware pamphlets and bookmarks are distributed.
Public Events and Presentations
Revelstoke Bear Aware delivers many presentations and also attends many public events and festivals.
Bear Aware volunteers work hard, and are much appreciated! If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, even for a day, please contact us!
